Short answer
Cambodia is a small consumer market: 17.8 million people in 2025, with modern trade concentrated in a few cities. Sizing it means starting from population and income, then narrowing to the channel and the category you can actually serve, because national averages overstate the addressable market for most imported products.
The top-down numbers, and their limits
Three numbers anchor any sizing exercise, and each has a specific limit you should respect.
| Number | Figure | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Population | 17,847,982 (2025, World Bank, updated 8 October 2026) | Nothing about income, age or household structure, which is what actually drives demand |
| Real GDP growth | 5.3% (2025), 3.9% forecast for 2026 (AMRO, October 2026) | Growth in construction and agriculture is not growth in your category |
| Approved fixed-asset investment | USD 5.92bn across 382 projects, January to September 2026 (CDC) | Approved value is not cash and mostly reflects manufacturing, not consumer demand |
National-level market reports for Cambodia are mostly paid. The credible free sources are the government and institutional ones, and they are the ones we use.
Where demand physically is
For an imported consumer product, the channel structure matters more than the national average. Modern trade in Cambodia is concentrated: the United States Department of State’s 2026 Investment Climate Statement and trade reporting both describe a market dominated by a small number of chains and a large modern-trade share concentrated in Phnom Penh, with Siem Reap, the coastal provinces and the border towns carrying the rest.
That has three practical consequences:
- Your realistic market is urban. A national distribution plan built on population overstates the addressable market by a wide margin for anything with a modern-trade channel.
- Distribution is a route, not a map. Modern chains, wholesalers, and the border trade with Thailand and Vietnam are different routes with different economics, margins and rules.
- Seasonality and geography are tied together. Border trade moves when the border moves, and it moves with it.
We have not published a provincial split of modern retail sales, because the trade-press figures we found could not be traced to a primary source. If you need one, the honest answer is that it has to be measured in the field, which is part of what our research service does.
E-commerce: a real but small channel
PROFITENCE’s 2024 study for Cambodia, published through the Open Development Cambodia data library, put the e-commerce market at about USD 1.12bn in 2024 and projected roughly USD 1.81bn by 2029, which is a compound rate close to 10% a year. It also mapped the marketplace landscape and buyer behaviour, and it is the most detailed free dataset we have found.
Two caveats. The study is a commissioned market report rather than an official statistic, and other published estimates for the same year differ substantially, so treat the level as indicative and the direction as useful. And a growing online channel in Cambodia is largely a channel for international sellers, which means the marketplace and logistics rules matter as much as the demand.

Use import data to size a category
Trade data is the most objective demand proxy available, because it is what people actually bought. The National Trade Repository gives you the tariff classification and duty for any commodity, and Cambodia’s import statistics show what came in, from where and at what value.
The method that works:
- Define your category precisely enough to map to HS codes. Too broad and you get a number that includes products you cannot sell; too narrow and you understate the market.
- Read the import value for the last three years and separate your category from adjacent codes that share a chapter but not a market.
- Cross-check the direction of travel against the sources of growth in the economy. A category growing faster than imports overall is usually gaining share, not riding a market.
- Test the result against the physical channel: if the modelled volume is much larger than what the modern trade and distributor channel can physically absorb in a year, the model is wrong.
When a category is not separately reported, the research has to come from the channel: store audits, distributor stock data, and what the trade actually says. That is slower and less certain than a data series, and it is the part of research that cannot be automated.
How we size a market
- Define the buyer. Household, business or institutional, and the decision-maker who signs.
- Size the reachable population. From the national figure, narrow by income, location and channel access.
- Model the unit economics. Landed cost, channel margin, retail price, and the volume that makes the model work.
- Test it in the field. What price points actually sell, what distributors will stock, and what the competition is charging.
- State the confidence. Which parts of the answer are data, which are estimates, and which are assumptions you should test yourself.
Questions investors ask
How big is the Cambodian consumer market?
Cambodia had 17,847,982 people in 2025 on World Bank figures updated 8 October 2026, with real GDP growth of 5.3% in 2025. Consumer demand is smaller and more urban than the headline population suggests, because modern trade is concentrated in a few cities.
How much of the market is online?
The most detailed free study we found, PROFITENCE’s 2024 report published through Open Development Cambodia, put e-commerce at about USD 1.12bn in 2024 growing to roughly USD 1.81bn by 2029. It is a commissioned report rather than an official statistic, and other estimates for the same year differ, so read it as direction rather than level.
Is Cambodia a good market for imported consumer goods?
It depends on your price point and your channel. The market is small and concentrated, so a product needs either a genuinely strong price position in urban modern trade, or a route to the border and informal channels. Test the landed cost against the retail price before committing to a distribution model.
How do I size the market for my product?
Map your category to HS codes, read Cambodia’s import values for those codes over three years, separate adjacent codes that share a chapter but not a market, then test the result against what the channel can physically absorb. The trade data gives you the ceiling; the channel gives you the reachable market.
Do I need local market research to enter Cambodia?
For a consumer product, yes. Published data tells you the size of the category and the direction of travel. It does not tell you the shelf price that works, the distributor’s willingness to stock, or what your competitor is actually doing. That has to come from the field.
How fast is Cambodia growing?
Real GDP grew 6.0% in 2024 and 5.3% in 2025 on World Bank figures, and AMRO forecast 3.9% for 2026 in its October 2026 update, down from 4.2% in July. Growth in construction and agriculture does not translate into demand for every category, so the rate is a context, not an answer.
